This was Doug McConnell's last year as chair of the Celtic Heritage Program at the Caledonian Games, which he founded. He and Gloria are retiring to The Gold Coast of Queensland in his native Australia. Doug was presented with a pair of fancily decorated cakes at the setup lunch on the Friday before the Games; and both he and Gloria were presented at the Jean Patrick Memorial Dance with a dance (McConnell's Awa) and music for it (Going Home) both of which were written by Bob McMurtry

The Reel and Strathspeyper became available electronically in March for the first time. It was posted to the Branch website (www.rscds-sf.org) where it could be accessed &/or down-loaded by the membership. Members can get on an Email notification list by sending an Email with subscribe as the subject to [email protected]. Beginning with the 2004/2005 membership year this will be the primary method of distribution replacing the 4th class mailings. Hard copy is still available as an extra cost option. There are three advantages to getting the R&S from the website: 1) Distribution is cost free to the Branch. 2) It is faster since it is posted the same day that the hard copy goes to the printer. 3) Pictures are in color and have better definition than the hard copy, which are black & white only.

The AGM was held in conjunction with the May Monthly Party in San Francisco. The election was uncontested and the only other business was the awarding of Certificates of Appreciation to Janis & Ned Dairiki for their musical contributions, to Jennifer Kelly for her part in producing the Red Thistle teaching videos & for her many flower arrangements at Branch events, and to Bud Wisecarver for supplying & maintaining the high stage for the Caledonian Games.

Livermore produced its first Scottish Games on May 15 & 16 with the usual collection of athletic events, pipe bands, musical acts, venders and highland and country dancing. It was sponsored by LARPD and the Tri-Valley Scotian League at Robertson Park, 3200 Robertson Park Road. There was also an outdoor ceilidh of Celtic song and dance on Saturday evening in downtown Livermore, and the Livermore Class had a 'Try it Out Party with music by Susan Worland Bentley and Andy Imbrie that same evening

The Branch Membership Committee finally finished the first membership handbook and got it approved by the Board. A copy was sent to each member with the Branch Directory and Society subscription book. The project was started by Connie Wai and Bradley Hobbs some years ago and was completed by Eugene and Virginia Bissell, Bradley Hobbs (chair), Susie Langdon Kass (layout), and Witsie McKelvy. Alan Twhigg did the final editing.

Lafayette Class celebrated its 40th anniversary with a highly successful party at the Lafayette Veterans Hall on October 16th, and the Reel & Strathspeyper celebrated its 40th anniversary with the November/December issue
